I'm always intrigued when the Olympic Games rolls around every 4 years. The increased interest in otherwise obscure sporting categories fascinates me because most of them have world (or continental) championships on a very regular basis that don't get the same attention.
Is it because we collectively get national pride in how many medals 'we' obtain? Is it the saturation media coverage? Is it how companies use it for commercial gain?
I don't know - but what I do relish are the stories of athletes performing at their highest levels because to them it's special. How years of training can come down to one moment. How an outstanding achievement can capture the attention of the world.
Thats what inspires me - the joy of 'the event'. It's a great reminder to create events in my life - I might not be running in the 100m final, but I can make sure to do things that I can look back from future me and know that on that day I was my best.
